Descubra el molino de mareas de Loix
This mill, built between the XIVᵉ and XVIIᵉ centuries, was used to grind, but also to cause what are known as ‘chasses’ which enabled the harbour to be cleaned of mud, and to manage the passages to the south and the Ile de Ré, being the only place through which to pass. Hence its other name, Moulin à marée du passage.
In 2010, after the Xynthia storm, the prefecture classified it as a black zone, threatening to destroy it. But the locals refused to see it disappear and it was preserved, before acquiring the title of Historic Monument. Nowadays, it is no longer used for grinding but continues to clean the port and uses the ‘flushing’ system to feed the salt marshes, thanks to a shovel.
The mill is privately owned and cannot be visited. However, you can admire it from the port and cycle along it.
